I am a local resident of the Gold Coast, writing to express my deep concern regarding the ongoing sister city relationship between the Gold Coast and Netanya, Israel, originally known as Umm Khalid in occupied Palestine. This relationship is highly controversial given the ongoing human rights abuses and the allegations of plausible genocide against Palestinians by the Israeli government.

The continued alliance with Netanya not only tarnishes the reputation of our beautiful city but also aligns us with policies and actions that I, along with many others, find morally and ethically unacceptable. The illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and the treatment of Palestinian people have been widely condemned by international organizations, including the United Nations and numerous human rights groups.

It is essential that the Gold Coast abides by international law and stands on the right side of history by disassociating from entities involved in such violations as Israel has committed. Maintaining this sister city relationship undermines our community values and could have significant negative impacts on our tourism and international reputation. With growing calls to boycott the Gold Coast until our council takes a public stance against Israel’s actions and terminates the sister-city relationship, I fear how this will impact our local economy and reputation.

I urge you to terminate the sister city agreement with Netanya immediately. Doing so will demonstrate our city's commitment to international law, human rights, peace, and justice. I trust you will consider the voices of the Gold Coast residents and take appropriate action to end this partnership urgently.
